UNION LEADERS FOUND GUILTY: Anthony Fazio Sr., Anthony Fazio Jr. and John Fazio Jr. — who held top posts in Local 348S of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union for 35 years — were convicted in Manhattan federal court last week for extorting and stealing over $1 million from the union, a pension fund and employers. The local union has about 12,000 members and represents workers in a number of industries including retail and apparel manufacturing. “The Fazio’s exploited their positions as union bosses to extort money from employers and to raid union coffers and benefit funds for over two decades,” said U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara. The Fazio’s extorted as much as $25,000 annually from one employer.
All three defendants were found guilty of racketeering conspiracy, racketeering and extortion conspiracy, with each count carrying a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
