DESIGN IT YOURSELF: Uniqlo is jumping into the customization game. The brand has launched a new service that allows customers to design their own t-shirt. Called UTme!, the service uses a smartphone app to create the design. Users can choose to draw their design using their finger on the touchscreen, type a slogan or message, or even upload a photo. Special effects, such as a paint splash effect or a pop-art style dot effect, are applied to the design simply by shaking the phone. Once the design is complete, the customer orders it through the app and it will be shipped to anywhere in Japan.
In a related move, Uniqlo has also set up a temporary printing station in its Ginza store through mid August. Customers who design their t-shirts using an iPad in the store can watch it being printed using a high-quality inkjet printer, and then ironed to set the ink. The t-shirts are priced at 1,990 yen, or about $20.
