VALLEY’S BELTWAY CONNECTION: Fashion designer Alvin Valley has been tapped as an education ambassador. The designer is working with the White House’s Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics to help spread the word to Hispanics across the U.S. that they can achieve whatever they want through a good education and strong desire. “I’m very lucky to have had people in my life who believed in me and pushed me to overcome whatever obstacles I faced,” said Valley. One of the initiatives’ primary goals is to increase the number of Hispanics in traditional STEM programs that focus on science, technology, engineering and math. Valley majored in architecture in college.
The initiative uses several outreach tools, such as mainstream and social media, school visits, White House blogs, news releases and newsletters to reach the Hispanic community. In addition, the leaders of the initiative are organizing a forum to be held Aug. 27 and Aug. 28 at Pixar Studios in Northern California and are speaking at various inner-city school districts across the country.
