AUSTRALIA BOUND: While numerous designers are making the trek to Asia these days to host events in cities like Beijing and Hong Kong, far fewer are heading further south to Australia. Two exceptions are Diane von Furstenberg and Roberto Cavalli, who are both heading down under later this month.

In her first trip to Australia in 20 years, von Furstenberg will present her spring collection at Westfield Sydney on Oct. 24, not far from the location of her stand-alone boutique that opened in 2010. The next day, she is booked to speak to 300 people at a lunch organized by the Sydney women’s business group Business Chicks.

On Oct. 27, the designer will fly to the Hayman Island luxury resort on Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef to unveil her latest hotel collaboration: the two-story DVF Penthouse, newly refurbished by von Furstenberg after the resort was decimated by Cyclones Anthony and Yasi in early 2011.

Cavalli’s Aussie itinerary is relatively understated by comparison to that of Cyclone Diane. On the morning of Oct. 31, he will personally unveil his new 42-piece capsule collection for Target Australia at Westfield Bondi Junction. The range — which retails for 49 to 129 Australian dollars, or $50 to $132 at current exchange, and features model Karolina Kurkova in its point-of-sale material — goes on sale that day.

Given the queues outside the Zara and Topshop openings in Australia over the past 12 months — not to mention the near hysteria that greeted the arrival of Stella McCartney’s first Target Australia collection in 2007 — Cavalli could be in for a fun morning. The following day he is due to head south to talk up the range to some Melbourne journalists.
