Louis Vuitton Sets Film Series on Major Cities

The first film, set in Hong Kong, portrays eight attractive women in romantic settings across the Chinese territory.

URBAN AFFAIRS: Hong Kong is the star of the first of a series of short films commissioned by Louis Vuitton that seeks to represent cities in relation to gender. “When Hong Kong is a Woman,” a two-minute work by Jean-Claude Thibaut, a director who has shot ads for the likes of Dior and Porsche, can be seen on Vuitton’s online magazine New, Now and its YouTube channel. It portrays eight attractive Hong Kong women in romantic settings across the Chinese territory.

“Miss Hong Kong holds my eternal fascination,” the video’s voice-over concludes. It also gives a nod to the city’s role as an economic conduit to China, with the voice-over calling it a “gateway to her motherland.”

The film, which was uploaded earlier this week, comes at a delicate time for the city, which is heading into the election season. Tensions are high between Hong Kongers and cash-rich Mainlanders, who are increasingly coming to the city to shop and snap up real estate. Earlier this year, protests erupted outside a Dolce & Gabbana store in Hong Kong. While a reported ban on photography of the store initiated the demonstrations, the incident came to symbolize the increasingly antagonistic atmosphere between Mainlanders and Hong Kongers.

Los Angeles will be the next city in the series, Vuitton noted.
