URBAN VIBE: The Berlin outpost of Denmark’s streetwear label and concept store Wood Wood went heavy metal Thursday night to host Nordic homegirl and jewelry designer Vibe (pronounced VEE-beh) Harsløf.
Harsløf offered a preview of her upcoming Femme’esque collection for fall, which she said was inspired by the early hiphop scene, and New York in the Seventies. Oversized hoop earrings harken back to the looks loved by female rap legends, while talon-tastic fingertip rings and triple ring sets called to mind long pointed nails. Laceframes and lacebands for shoes are designed to make sneakers snazzy, a cold weather alternative to Harsløf’s growing collection of ankle jewelry.
It’s not her first musical connection — ethereal golden handpieces from a collaboration with New York jewerly label Bijules appeared in David Bowie’s recent video for the song “The Next Day.”
Harsløf’s spring collection, Vespertine, was on display at Wood Wood, and on offer, for those back on the chain gang. The line, which plays with the dichotomy between solidity and fluidity, is made up of necklaces, bangles, headpieces and earcuffs in sterling silver and gold-plated sterling silver. Rings span four fingers, or daintily encircle fingertips. Prices average about 150 euros, or $195.
The pieces take visual cues from male classic jewelry, like tiepins and pocket watches, but become fine and feminine. “What you expect will be soft is stiff, and what you expect to be hard is soft,” Harsløf said. “My friends call me goldsmith nerdy!”
In addition to Wood Wood, Harsløf’s designs are available in select stores globally, including Henrik Vibskov’s New York boutique and at Colette in Paris.
