SWEATER WEATHER: Fifteen students from 12 universities have been selected as winners of this year’s Wool School prize, an initiative from the Campaign for Wool, which is supported by the Prince of Wales.
More than 100 students submitted designs for woolen sweaters that will be manufactured and sold in stores to celebrate Wool Week, which runs from October 14-20.
Now in it second year, Wool School enlisted Christopher Raeburn, Margaret Howell, Barbour, Brora, Albam, Folk and Topman to join retailers including Marks & Spencer, Pringle of Scotland, Lyle & Scott, Topshop, Hobbs and Jigsaw on the roster of labels who will partner with the winning students to produce the sweaters that were designed in keeping with this year’s theme, “knitwear traditions of the British Isles”.
Some of the winning students included Jessie Roselyn from the University of Nottingham for Albam, Eve Cavell from the University of Huddersfield for Jigsaw, Molly Cormican from the University of Leeds for Marks & Spencer women’s wear, and Siobhan Tsang from Kingston University for Topshop.
The initiative was set up in 2012 to encourage the designers of tomorrow to engage with wool. Five percent of the Wool School sweater sales will be invested back in to fashion education programs in the U.K.
