SURFING IN STYLE: Fans of the pro surf circuit finally have something to throw on if they tire of too much fun in the sun. On the 40th anniversary of the pro tour, the World Surf League has launched its first apparel line.
Similar to how supporters of NFL’s Tom Brady and NBA’s Stephen Curry sport jerseys emblazoned with the athletes’ names on the back, wave chasers now can slip on $79.99 jerseys for Mick Fanning, Kelly Slater, John John Florence, Julian Wilson and Stephanie Gilmore — many of which sold out when they were introduced on Australia’s Gold Coast at the first stops of this year’s tour.
Retailing from $24.99 to $59.99, WSL-branded T-shirts, Windbreakers, zip-up warm-up tops, sweatshirts and hats round out the apparel line for men, women and kids.
“It’s something we’ve talked about for a few years,” said Tyler Wright, the WSL’s top-ranked female surfer, “and to start this season and see a bunch of fans wearing the jerseys and supporting the athletes is a great experience.”
