YURMAN’S SWISS MISS: After what sources call an “exasperating” back-and-forth with the powers that be at Baselworld, the international watch and jewelry fair, David Yurman has pulled out as an exhibitor, WWD has learned.
The company confirmed that it won’t be participating in the fair and added that it prefers to focus on its growing international business instead.

Taking place from April 25 to May 2 in Basel, Switzerland, the yearly trade show is widely regarded as the premier fair for watch and jewelry brands. Taking that into consideration, it came as a surprise to many that Yurman would yank itself from the important selling event.
Sources with knowledge of the matter said Yurman was unhappy with the location of its booth on the showroom floor this spring. Currently, the trade show is reshuffling some of the placements of its exhibitors amid renovations to its halls.
Most likely, that’s just one reason David Yurman passed on Basel. Over the years, negotiations have been “tense” between Baselworld and Yurman, a source said.
Yurman denied such speculation and said it would be open to participating in Basel in the future.
Baselworld typically welcomes more than 1,800 exhibitors and roughly 100,000 visitors that are comprised of retailers and wholesalers.
“With a burgeoning global business and a focus on retail and shop-within-shop properties, we have decided to market ourselves independently of Basel next year,” the New York-based brand said. “We have been strong supporters of Basel and our participation has long been a highly effective and engaging platform for our company.”
