POWER PRINTS: Zandra Rhodes has teamed with the People Tree, the eco-friendly clothing brand that works with Fair Trade artisans and suppliers, for a capsule collection that will launch in June. Rhodes has used Sixties archive prints, which have never appeared on clothing, for the Happy Woman collection of body-con dresses, oversize t-shirts and a range of bold and printed tunics.
“It’s fabulous to be reviving prints from a long while ago,” said Rhodes at the launch earlier this month at the designer’s penthouse apartment in Bermondsey. Rhodes, who was dressed in a printed dress from the collection, said the Mr. Man print was her favorite. “It was an advertisement for Omo washing powder,” said Rhodes. “And the other prints — the stars — [came from] Pop Art going on at that time.”
Safia Minney, the founder and chief executive officer of People Tree, said she worked with Rhodes to select the prints. “We wanted to look at the 1960s and women’s empowerment. We were really keen to get something that would talk to the empowerment of all of those lovely organic cotton farmers and tailors in India,” she said.
Each piece is designed with 100 percent certified organic cotton from Agrocel Pure & Fair Cotton Growers’ Association, a People Tree partner based in India. Prices start at 40 pounds, or $65, for a cotton T-shirt, and go up to 78 pounds or $128 for a dress. All figures have been converted at current exchange. The collection will be available for purchase on peopletree.co.uk.
