Hue has unveiled its second partner in its Guest Designer Program: Amy Smilovic’s whimsical, contemporary label, Tibi.

As legwear on the fall runway becomes as common as peacoats and furs, the Kayser-Roth-owned legwear giant affords fledgling brands an opportunity to create a capsule collection. Hue launched the series one year ago with designer Tracy Reese.
The Hue by Tibi collection will premiere on the designer brand’s runway Tuesday morning at the tents at Bryant Park. The line, which retails from $20 to $60, will be offered to retailers during this month’s market.
“I think our use of novelty and detailed prints made us an interesting company for Hue to work with,” said Smilovic. “And once we met with them, it was this perfect marriage of ideas. As a company, we are identifying areas where people want to see the Tibi name and tights have always been up there. The category is having such a moment right now and for us it’s been frustrating scouring the Internet looking for tights for shows. So when Hue fell out of the sky, it was perfect.”
For previous shows, Smilovic said she used black tights by such brands as Wolford, Fogol and DKNY. But as the category grew trendier and more novelty-driven, it grew harder to find legwear that didn’t identify with another brand.
The Hue by Tibi collection features Seventies-inspired prints with an emphasis on special textures and knits.
“Our girl is confident in the way she dresses and she’s comfortable layering,” Smilovic said. “We wanted tights with different textures, like tweeds. We were inspired by the men’s wear trend such as herringbone patterns, men’s suiting and heavy ribbed stripes. It’s all really comfortable and cozy. With the cold weather, there are other ways of dressing warmly than wearing a heavy coat.”
According to Catrinel Popa, Hue’s vice president of design and merchandising, Tibi, like Tracy Reese, fits the ideal aesthetic for the collaboration.
“It is their approach and the similarities between their approach to fashion that we are drawn to,” Popa said. “They are both chic and stylish and colorful, and it’s easy-to-understand sophistication. Tibi’s fabrics are beautiful and simple, and the sense of color is very modern and right on, and we love that. We felt like we can add something to her collection just like we did to Tracy’s last year. Something that would complete it, which is what legwear does.”
Moving into spring 2009, Hue has another guest designer lined up, but is remaining tight-lipped about the partnership, admitting only that the collection will focus on sheers.
