NEW YORK -- Music by the Gershwins helped Bloomingdale's sell a heap of hosiery this week.
It all happened Tuesday, when shoppers at the store's flagship were treated to a rousing medley of Gershwin songs by members of the cast of "Crazy for You."
It was a promotion for Givenchy Hosiery, whose Body Smoothers are worn by the Broadway show's dancers, and despite the snowy weather, about 200 people attended.
The Givenchy Body Smoother is a support-style pantyhose favored by dancers, said Barbara Guzy, senior vice president at Pennaco, which has the Givenchy Hosiery license. Twenty dozen pairs of the style were requested for the dancers when the show opened.
After the Bloomingdale's performance, a raffle for tickets to the show was held in the hosiery department, along with a special one-day, two-for-one sale on Givenchy styles.
The raffle and sale were also held in four other Bloomingdale's stores in the metropolitan area.
According to Michele Sanders, hosiery buyer, more than 1,200 units were sold during the day at the flagship and a total of 1,700 units at all metropolitan area stores.
