Yes, Barbie might have hit the big 5-0, but her wardrobe is hip as ever. Michael Kors, Bryan Bradley, Bob Mackie, Rachel Roy, Alexander Wang, Naeem Khan and Kimora Lee Simmons were among the 50 designers asked by the CFDA to add to the perpetually tan, blonde icon’s considerable closet. A sparkling pink runway on— what else?— Valentine’s Day was the setting for the parade of frou, flou and loads of bubblegum pink. Christian Louboutin chose Pantone’s Barbie Pink as the shade for the classic peep-toe pumps that accompanied each look. The show opened with Roy’s retro-glam-sequin swimsuit and bedazzled trench. Marchesa offered a cascading lavender gown, and Alexander Wang added a sporty sparkly bodysuit and hot pink blazer. There was minimal— Calvin Klein’s singlesleeve white dress— and maxed-out— Bob Mackie’s feathered and fringed gown and headdress à la Cher. No recession here, just a birthday tribute to looking great and having fun at any age. After all, 50 is the new 40.
