Looking to expand the retail end of its traditionally wholesale brands, Liz Claiborne Inc. has hired Adam Levy, president of retail and ready-to-wear at Jones Apparel Group Inc., for the new post of president of retail for its partnered brands division.

Levy, who managed 285 retail stores and e-commerce at Jones, will be responsible for overseeing e-commerce and retail for partnered brands, as the $4 billion company restages its Liz Claiborne brand outlet stores, considers opening full-priced Liz Claiborne stores with the Isaac Mizrahi-designed product; tests Kensie retail; adds Kensie e-commerce in 2009, and opens DKNY Jeans family outlets.

“There isn’t anything we wouldn’t consider in how to cater to our consumer,” said Dave McTague, executive vice president of partnered brands. “Our wholesale partners are our priority, but any time you have a designer brand, there’s a desire to bring a full picture of your brand as you would architect it directly to the consumer.”

Depending on real estate opportunities and the economic environment, McTague said that opening full-price Liz Claiborne brand and Kensie stores, each in single digits, could happen in 2009.

Based in New York, Levy started Tuesday and reports to McTague.

Before joining Jones, Levy worked in the retail and outlet divisions at Tommy Hilfiger, Candie’s Inc. and Bob’s Stores. He began his career at R.H. Macy & Co., where he held buying and sales positions.

“We sought out Adam for his experience, from Macy’s training to where I met him at Tommy Hilfiger,” McTague said. “He had been running a fairly complex outlet store and e-commerce business for Jones across multiple brands, which impressed me.”
