Kangol, the 70-year-old British headwear company, is going into wholesale apparel.

The firm has signed a master licensing agreement with the Los Angeles-based Apparel Limited Inc. to produce a full range of products carrying the Kangol name. Apparel Limited will design, produce and distribute a collection of women’s and men’s contemporary sportswear for a fall 2009 launch. The apparel collection will make its debut at the MAGIC trade show in Las Vegas on Feb. 17.

“I have had the Dickies Girl license for the past nine years, and it does very well, but when Kangol approached us to do something new, I was very excited to work on it,” said Masud Sarshar, chief executive officer of Apparel Limited. “In a time when everyone is either going out of business or downsizing in some way, I’m happy to say that we are coming out with something new to offer.”

Sarshar said he is looking for other licensing opportunities for the Kangol brand, hoping to get into categories such as swimwear, footwear, socks, fragrance and accessories.

As for the apparel, Sarshar said the line will comprise an array of items, including oversize sweaters, cashmere hoodies, polos, T-shirts, chinos and jeans. Each collection will offer select Kangol Black Label pieces such as 100 percent cashmere sweaters and leather jackets. The line wholesales from $30 to $200.

Sarshar said he is aiming to launch in high-end specialty stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Barneys New York, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus and Fred Segal.

Kangol sells apparel in its own freestanding stores throughout England. That line is not available for wholesale.
