Balancing good design with commercial viability is a dance, andPhillip Lim did a bang-up job of it this season with a 3.1 collection hecalled Sonomama. The word means “as you are” in Japanese and refers tothe steadfast style of moto-racing enthusiasts, a reference Lim hasplayed on before to winning results. Such was the case here with theexpected biker vests and racer-back dresses, but the theme moreover wastouched upon with zipper details and leather patches.
The lot was layered up the way a modern woman wants to wear atrend. The opening look, for example, featured an embossed pink Neoprenecoat with a detachable leather bib — making it appear that anotherjacket was underneath — worn over a sweater and a fierce leather mini.It worked well, as did the bevy of great outerwear, roomy shorts andskinny cargos, not to mention a cross-body bag that had editorsswooning.
