By now it’s hardly news that Michelle Obama likes her cardigans. The First Lady has flaunted the staple’s versatility on occasions ranging from official state visits to serving lunch at a soup kitchen. The result: a renewed interest in a sweater that’s never gone out of style. Designers across the board reworked the essential cover-up for fall, proving that there are a million ways to wear it, from preppy at Lacoste to punky at Marc Jacobs. Adam Adam Lippes and Banana Republic took to the long and languid silhouette. J. Crew and Prada went for texture and a pop of color. Meanwhile, Rei Kawakubo’s shrunken, cropped cardi at Comme des Garçons skewed more quirky than classic.
