Format, a line of neckwear and hosiery that was popular in the Nineties, is back.

The brand, which was started by Bruce Mertz in 1989, was sold to Gordon & Ferguson in 1999.

Gordon & Ferguson shut down operations in summer 2008, two years after it was purchased by Indian apparel exporter Sarju International.

Mertz said he bought the Format name in December and has licensed MMG to produce neckwear and socks. He plans to seek additional licensees for dress and sport shirts, tailored clothing and jeans.

Mertz said many of the designs for the ties and socks will come from his archive of patterns from the Forties and Fifties.

The line will relaunch for fall and is expected to make its debut to retailers at the MAGIC show next week, Mertz said.
