New Yorkers were ready for that first chill of fall, even with the temperature teasers of the last few weeks — days that seemed to swing between summer and winter. And out of storage came those furs, puffy jackets and ample cold weather accessories— gloves, hats, cuddly scarves, leggings and boots — from ankle-high wedges to high over-the-knee versions. Most popular were short leather jackets, layered, Eighties-style, over one or two sweaters or shirts, often with jeans, occasionally even over shorts and leggings. Bold houndstooth coats with a vintage feel surfaced from Bleecker Street to Bergdorf Goodman. All manner of long fur vests over bulky sweaters hit the streets, along with outsize pullovers. Certainly the West Village had far funkier fare than most of the uptown venues. But those recent blustery days seemed to inspire trendy New Yorkers to break out their fall favorites to begin the next round of shopping.
