Brazil’s exports of leather hides and skins increased 24.3 percent to $246 million last month from $197.9 million a year earlier, according to a monthly report from its Foreign Trade Secretariat, or SECEX.
June’s exports were down 5 percent in June compared to May, when they reached a monthly record $258.9 million.
In the first half through June, Brazil’s leather exports were up a record 23 percent to $1.46 billion, according to SECEX. In the six months, China represented 26.7 percent of exports, followed by Italy with 17.2 percent, the U.S. with 9.7 percent and Hong Kong with 9.6 percent.,
Brazil is the second-largest leather producer and third-largest exporter in the world, according to the Brazilian Leather project, developed through a partnership between the Center for the Brazilian Tannery Industry and the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency. The initiative promotes the image of the Brazilian leather commercially and institutionally within a varied strategic public and has been able to expand the market, with exports to almost a 100 nations and contributing to the economy of the country.
