The USA Water Polo Men’s National Team will be bringing a taste of the California lifestyle to the Summer Olympics in London.

Katin USA, the specialist of surf trunks and gear, has been tapped as the Team USA supplier for the water polo men’s team at the Olympics. Katin, a family-owned company created in Huntington Beach, Calif., in 1954, will also provide Team USA with a variety of workout and lifestyle apparel, including khaki shorts, button-down shirts, compression tops and technical workout T-shirts.

Robert Schmidt, chief executive officer and a co-owner of Katin USA, said exposure at the Olympics will bolster the brand’s franchise.

“It’s going to do great things for the brand….There are so many [active and performance] brands out there, but you could say we’re the newest and oldest company. We’ve been supplying youth water polo and lifeguards across the nation for years. It’s something that we’ve never really exploited. Now, the brand is really being talked about,” said Schmidt. “We have a tremendous amount of respect for bigger brands, but we feel a whisper in a crowded room is more powerful than a yell. So we’ve also implemented other projects like canoeing and race teams in Hawaii, which has brought a lot of exposure to the brand.”

Jen Rottenberg, chief marketing officer for USA Water Polo, said Katin USA “epitomizes the active, healthy, aquatic culture of the California lifestyle.”

“We feel water polo is the team sport of California, and the national team comes from California. They like to surf and wear their philosophy,” explained Rottenberg. “We noticed that Katin’s brand heritage is very similar to ours. Both of us are about living a healthy lifestyle, one of the key aspects to water sports and Katin.”

Regarding the team players for the Olympics, Rottenberg said USA Water Polo, which is the national governing body for water polo in America, is planning an event the third week of June.

“We’ve got a bunch of [pre-Olympic] activities planned, including a public send-off for the team players…13 of the 18 who are training will be selected to be part of Team USA,” she said.

A co-branded social media campaign, as well as advertising and event signage, is being planned.
