Recent shopping trips to China’s Wuhan and Guangzhou demonstrated that young women and men in both cities tend to favor casual looks that would be very at home in Western cities.
With 10 million people, Wuhan is Central China’s most populous city and is also one of the nation’s hottest — literally. The newly developed Han Street shopping strip in the Wuchang District attracts locals with a fine mist of cooling water sprayed from above shop fronts. These include domestic chains such as PeaceBird, D’zzit, Ozzo and Girdear, along with international vertical retailers like Zara, Gap, Uniqlo and H&M.

Guangzhou, located about 600 miles south of Wuhan, is the capital of Guangdong Province, which has a population of 105 million. The province’s manufacturing industry accounts for more than a quarter of China’s foreign trade and has made it one of the nation’s wealthiest provinces. This new development by Hong Kong based Swire Properties links flagships including Dior, Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Miu Miu with the five-star Mandarin Oriental Guangzhou hotel.
