A bright and breezy day at the kickoff of the 129th U.S. Open drew a crowd of layered ladies for whom warming up while staying cool was key. “It’s a hundred degrees in the sun, but, like, 50 in the shade,” said one hyperbolic spectator — the high and low for that day were actually 72 and 61 degrees Fahrenheit. She wore a light cardigan over a white strapless dress, while others turned to scarves or full-on jackets topping off summery polos and frocks. And while the casual vibe was alive and well, fashion’s influence — in luxury handbags, au courant hats and oversize shades — was apparent at Arthur Ashe Stadium. “Athletes are brand representatives and more like models than ever before,” said Julien Farel, third-time official pre- and post-game stylist for the Open. “They push sporty toward chic, and the spectators follow suit.”
