HOUSE PARTY: The British Consul General to Hong Kong and Macau, Caroline Wilson, opened the doors of her home to fete London designer Jenny Packham on Thursday evening. About 60 guests attended the private soirée at the third-floor apartment in the Frank Gehry-designed building Opus Hong Kong, one of the toniest addresses in the city.
Part of the UK government’s GREAT Britain campaign, the event was held in celebration of Packham’s new flagship store opening on Lyndhurst Terrace in the Central district today. The 861-square-foot boutique is the brand’s first Asian outpost. Packham said she is also toying with the idea of opening a second shop in the city devoted purely to eveningwear.
“I think Hong Kong picked us,” said Packham. “It feels like there is a lot of enthusiasm for the brand here.” Clad in a bespoke bugle-beaded black dress, she mingled with the crowd as a gaggle of models wearing her elaborate gowns swanned about the room.
“I always found [Hong Kong] a really exciting place to be. It’s a little bit like New York in that things can happen quite quickly,” she said.
Revelers filtered into the apartment throughout the evening passing a quirky holographic portrait Queen Elizabeth II at the entrance. Inside the art-adorned living room, they enjoyed a live classical piano performance and took in dramatic views of the city.
Packham will be focusing on bridalwear in the new store with a small edit of items from her eveningwear collection. She has observed strong interest in the brand from Asian brides over the years. “I think there is a shift to more contemporary bridalwear in Korea, Japan and Hong Kong,” she explained.
Packham plans for the Hong Kong boutique to serve as a “model” for future boutiques, which she will roll out in Mainland China. Winnie Cheng is one of the architects who designed the store. The brand currently has a presence in London, New York and Paris.
“We started looking around in different locations, the obvious ones being Shanghai and Beijing,” said Jenny Packham chief executive officer Mathew Anderson, who added that the company plans to launch an e-commerce site with Chinese language translation within the next three to six months.
