Jason Wu’s first foray into bridal design is set to launch in January with an exclusive collection for Net-a-porter.com.

Wu, who was catapulted to fame when he designed Michelle Obama’s inauguration gown, will offer a capsule bridal line of five ivory looks.

“I wanted to create an exclusive bridal collection for Net-a-porter that is both youthful and injected with elements of American sportswear, which I favor for my collections,” Wu said. “The capsule collection includes wonderful options for a bride, but also has a relaxed attitude with pieces that can be worn to other occasions.”

The offerings consist of a floor-length gown with layers of cascading ivory tulle, a long bias-cut godet chiffon skirt paired with an embroidered tank, an above-the-knee feather skirt with a chiffon tank and bow for embellishment, a shift dress with degrade beading and a fitted bodice dress in silk faille with a black bow belt. The dresses will range from $795 to $4,000.

The bridal selections will be offered on Net-a-porter.com as a global exclusive for a year. Although the arrangement is for one capsule collection, the designer may be open to doing it again, said a Wu spokeswoman. The Net-a-porter.com arrangement is an extension of the business that Wu is already doing with the luxury online site, she said, noting the designer has no plans to wholesale a full-scale bridal collection.

Wu has been busy on several fronts. In addition to designing his own collection, Wu has introduced his first footwear and handbag collection for spring. It will be available in 30 stores internationally, including Bergdorf Goodman and Lane Crawford. Wu also has a license with Modo eyewear for optical and sunglass collections, and he has completed a two-season commitment to design a capsule collection for Tse.
