PARIS — Maison Lejaby’s first ready-to-wear collection, inspired by the lingerie universe, will be unveiled on Monday on the official Paris calendar.
“I firmly believe in the innerwear-as-outerwear segment; we have to infuse more fashion into the field of lingerie, and I really wanted to have a young designer’s point of view on this market,” said Alain Prost, the house’s chief executive officer.
Parisian designer Léa Peckre fit the bill, after Prost met her through Didier Grumbach, president of the Chambre Syndicale.
The 2011 graduate of La Cambre school in Brussels, who that same year won the Grand Prize at the Hyères International Festival of Fashion and Photography, will find a fitting playground for her pure, minimalist vision of femininity.
For the rtw line, Peckre gleaned inspiration from one of Lejaby’s iconic pieces — the “nuage” (or “cloud”) bra. It’s a molded-cup bra in nude shades that appears to blend into skin thanks to its “spacer” technical foamy fabric.
The new mix-and-match, body-conscious rtw collection also plays with the idea of second-skin comfort and transparency. It not only includes flesh tones, but light and midnight blue, anthracite and camel hues. Some pieces like bodysuits will use tailoring fabric, such as alpaca wool, while robe coats, skirts, pants with ultrawide legs or streamlined high-neck tops with matching front-pleated pants are of stretch material or 3-D fabric. There are transparent items that even reveal the underlying lingerie.
The rtw is targeted at select high-end stores worldwide.
It’s not certain yet whether future collections and presentations are in the offing. “It’s a first step, and it is too early to say,” said Prost, of the upcoming runway show. “But I am used to investing on a long-term basis.”
This year marks Lejaby’s 130th birthday.
