This summer, Kors will open a lifestyle flagship at 610 Fifth Avenue between 49th Street and Channel Gardens, in the space currently occupied by Kenneth Cole. The 7,000-square-foot store will offer accessories from Michael Kors, Michael Michael Kors and Kors Michael Kors collections, as well as Michael Michael Kors ready-to-wear.

“The opening of my lifestyle flagship boutique at Rockefeller Center is an extremely humbling and exciting reality,” Kors said. “As both a designer and a native New Yorker, what could be more incredible than a store in the heart of the city at Rockefeller Center?”

As reported, Kenneth Cole Productions Inc. said last week it would close its Rockefeller Center flagship before April, along with eight other full-price stores.

The Rockefeller Center site is situated just across from Saks Fifth Avenue in a tourism hot zone. The Kors store will boast 15-foot ceilings, white marble floors, macassar wood displays and details such as zebra skin hides.

“The Rockefeller Center lifestyle flagship store reaffirms retail as a key component for our overall growth strategy,” said John Idol, chief executive officer of Michael Kors Inc. Kors is also planning to open a three-story Collection boutique at 790 Madison Avenue at 67th Street this spring, and the company is said to be eyeing a space on Robertson Boulevard in Los Angeles for another lifestyle concept store.

Kors, who kicked off the global retail strategy in 2006, continues to add boutiques around the world. By the end of this spring, the designer will have about 175 freestanding stores worldwide. This summer, Kors also will open his first Collection boutique in Hong Kong. The 850-square-foot store will be located at the Peninsula Hong Kong on Salisbury Road. It will serve as the cornerstone of the company’s retail expansion in Greater China over the next three years, which includes plans for 50 stores in the region, according to Idol.
