NEW YORK — Peter Som has found new manufacturing and distribution partners.
Peter Som Inc. inked a licensing deal with Milan-based clothing manufacturer Margon and New York multiline showroom ADC. Margon will manufacture the line, and the ADC showroom will distribute it globally. The two companies will team up in this agreement and work with Som through their offices in New York and Milan.
“In what has been a very challenging year, we are very pleased to have good news to report, and look forward to this new period with a renewed positive outlook,” said Elana Posner, chief executive officer of Peter Som Inc. “We are grateful for the support and work we have done with our local and overseas factories that we have worked with for the last 10 years. We look forward to working with them on other projects in the future.”
Som added, “[Margon’s] Italian craftsmanship and international distribution channels will enable the Peter Som brand to grow. I look forward to a successful partnership.”
Som, one of the most promising young American talents, has had several setbacks in recent months. He left his stint at Bill Blass, where he was creative director of women’s, in October when the company floundered. In January, he and his backer, Lord & Taylor subsidiary Creative Design Studios, split. Instead of staging a runway show, Som opted to show his fall collection quietly in his showroom.
As a result of the new deal, the company, which is coowned by the designer and Posner, will restructure its New York corporate office. It moved from a space at 260 West 39th Street to a smaller office on Morton Street in the West Village. It also hired public relations firm KCD.
Som won’t show a resort collection during the market next month. Instead, he plans to present both spring 1 and spring 2 collections in September. The lines will be delivered to stores in November and February, respectively.
“I have known Peter since the beginning of his designer career,” said Angelo Della Croce, owner of ADC. “In my eyes, he is a talented designer, and, most important, he is a very down-to-earth person. I did get in touch with Peter this past February, and after a couple of meetings, we both decided that it was the right time to begin a new [partnership].”
