MOSCOW — Victoria Beckham continued her global charm offensive last week by taking her fall collection to Moscow.
Wearing a black strapless number of her own design, Beckham presented the line to a small gathering of Russia’s elite at Tsum, the department store that will sell the collection.
“I haven’t held a mic for a long time,” Beckham coyly told the small crowd, before talking them through detailed descriptions of each dress. “I promise I’m not going to sing.”
Beckham spoke throughout the evening with eager confidence and self-deprecating humor. The small presentation continued the tradition she introduced at New York Fashion Week, making her line available to a chosen few rather than holding a large show.
Beckham said she had no plans to promote her line to fast-fashion chains, à la Kate Moss, but would instead focus on developing as a luxury designer.
The three-day trip was Beckham’s first to Russia, a country that prizes labels and fame, particularly in its fashion choices. In addition to the Victoria Beckham dress collection, Tsum will sell Beckham’s jeans and sunglasses.
Beckham was guided through the madness of the Russian capital by Dasha Zhukova, art collector and girlfriend of oligarch Roman Abramovich, and Naomi Campbell, who has been based here since getting serious with Vladislav Doronin, a Russian real estate magnate. (Campbell guest-edited the recently released April issue of Russian Vogue.)
The visit wasn’t all work. Beckham and company took a private tour of the Kremlin and saw a ballet at the Bolshoi Theatre, something Beckham said she had been dreaming about since training as a classical dancer as a child.
She also said she learned an important lesson: “It’s true, if you have good vodka then you don’t have a hangover.”
Yet, in Russia, it was difficult for Beckham to escape her Posh Spice image. At an exclusive dinner at Moscow’s Baccarat restaurant on Thursday night, pop star Dima Bilan introduced himself to the designer by informing her that he had won the Eurovision Song Contest in 2008. As the words, “We should do a duet,” left his lips, the smile that had been adorning Beckham’s face all evening quickly disappeared.
