A turnout of more than 180 designers, wholesalers and retailers at an Interfilière-inspired event Monday underscored the impact an international fabric and lace trade fair would have in the U.S. market.
Cohosted by French trade show giant Eurovet and fibers conglomerate Invista Inc., 21 global mills from the U.S., Europe and Asia — all of whom had exhibited at the Interfilière show in Paris in July — were showcased at Manhattan’s Tribeca Skyline Studios. The event evoked an informal trade fair environment where U.S. industry executives could focus on innovative fabrics and fibers, new technologies and directional trends for the intimate apparel, performance and swimwear markets.
The first-time collaboration drew major retailers and manufacturers including Victoria’s Secret and its sister operation Mast Industries, Gap Inc., Fila USA, Wacoal America, and Jockey International. A number of attendees who had missed the July session in Paris were enthusiastically perusing fabric swatches and discussing concepts gleaned from the fall-winter 2014/2015 season Interfilière textile fair, which is owned by Eurovet.
The exploratory event could lead to a full-blown textile show in the U.S., but the results will need to be evaluated, said Marie-Laure Bellon-Homps, Eurovet’s chief executive officer.
“Invista is a strategic partner….We are creating another adventure for Eurovet,” said Bellon-Homps.
Industry executives said they were very enthusiastic about attending and exhibiting at a U.S. version of the Interfilière show.
Suzanne Beck, vice president of sales for Tianhai Lace, a lace maker in mainland China, said she was “very hopeful” that a trade show would be created for the U.S.
“We [the U.S. market] don’t need to be at two shows in Paris in January and July. I’ve been seeing the January show get smaller and smaller. A lot of our customers, including Victoria’s Secret, Calvin Klein, Jockey, aerie, Gelmart, Wacoal and Dana-Co are at this event,” said Beck.
Christian Reiprich, international sales manager for TVB, a German circular knitted fabrics specialist, said, “This has proven to be an amazing opportunity to make contact with the U.S. market. At the end of the day, we would exhibit at a show in the U.S.”
“I think it’s wonderful. There are a lot of high-end laces and minimums are not as high. If you can’t go to the Paris shows, why not bring newness to the U.S. market?” asked designer Helen Sanchez.
The day-into-evening event ended with a video trend presentation, which focused on fashion and innovative fiber brands by Invista: Lycra Beauty, Lycra Sport, Xtra Life Lycra, and Lycra fiber with W Technology.
