Invista Inc. has chosen Lucy Gardner as the winner of the Lycra Future Designers Award.

Gardner, a young designer from the U.K., received the award at an event at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London on Wednesday. Competition for the prize involved designs from across the globe, with designs ranging from cycling garments to swimwear and lingerie.

“I can’t wait to see my designs come to life and to work with Invista in getting the collection in front of buyers, designers, stores and consumers. This is one of the most exciting things that has happened to me,” said Gardner, who will receive fabrics with Lycra fiber from Invista to help develop a collection to kick-start her career.

Participants were invited to submit designs that could be manufactured using Lycra fiber, along with trend boards and supporting documentation to make their case. Entries needed to be made up of any of the following categories of apparel: intimates, swimwear, active sportswear or hosiery and tights. Denise Sakuma, Invista’s apparel global director of brand and communications, presented Gardner with her award.

“Lucy’s designs were incredibly impressive, and the talent in the final four made it a tough decision,” said Sakuma. “However all the judges were especially impressed with Lucy’s cycling designs and their functionality.”

The finalists in this year’s edition of Lycra Future Designers included three other candidates: Patricia Clariza from the U.S.; Hanna Lucatelli from Brazil, and Han Zhongshu from China. The Lycra Future Designers Award was part of a WGSN Global Fashion Awards ceremony.
