After a more than 10-year hiatus, Jockey International returned to its showman’s roots and staged a formal fashion show in Manhattan for its fall collections for men and women.
Because of the positive reaction at the fashion venue at the Museum of Arts & Design, the 136-year-old specialist of men’s and women’s innerwear is considering doing more shows and presentations in the future, said Matthew Waller, Jockey’s manager of public relations.
“We received good response from editors and we’re looking to do a second show this fall for spring 2013,” said Waller. “It’s something we’re definitely considering.”
In the Nineties, Jockey staged a number of high-profile shows in New York at locations including the Fashion Institute of Technology, The New York Athletic Club, The Jockey Club and the Marriott Hotel in Times Square, as well as Macy’s and Lord & Taylor.
Meanwhile, Sally Tomkins, senior vice president of design, research and product development for Jockey, said a key initiative was to unveil innovative fabrics, updated silhouettes, and a bold color palette of solid red, yellow, green and blue inspired by contemporary works by Picasso, Richter, Rothko, Jasper Johns, William Morris and Abstract impressionism re-interpreted by various artists.
“We are definitely showing more fashion colors as well as updated woven boxers for men and women,” said Tomkins. The woven cotton boxers are rendered in a variety of plaids and prints and have youthful, preppy look.
New looks for women included updated underwear and tops from the new Preferred by Rachel Zoe collaboration, and two groups from the Modern Collection: Jockey Modern Nylon with Lace underwear in silky smooth blend of 78 percent nylon and 22 percent spandex, and the Jockey Modern Microfiber Seamfree Collection of undies in a blend of 95 percent nylon and 5 percent spandex. Also new was Jockey Shapewear in blends of cotton, and spandex and polyester and spandex. Styles include a tank, a high-scoop tank, a slip shaper, a tummy short and a tummy brief.
From the men’s arena, Jockey unveiled two groups in its Modern Collection: The Jockey Cotton Collection of 100 percent cotton that features clean, modern styling and stay-dry fabric, and the Jockey Cotton Stretch Collection of 95 percent cotton and 5 percent spandex that has a tailored fit and slimmer cut as well as stay-dry fabric.
