FAM Brands Taps John W. Spotts

FAM Brands LLC has named John W. Spotts to the new position of executive vice president of business development and licensing.

Spotts, a 15-year veteran of the licensing industry, formerly served as senior vice president of the international and licensing businesses at Eddie Bauer, as well as senior positions at Woolrich, Equity Management, The Sharper Image and Franklin Covey.

In his new post, he will report to Frank Zarabi, chief executive officer and owner of the Commerce, Calif.-based specialist of activewear, bodywear and apparel.

Zarabi described Spotts as having a “stellar track record in the business.”

Spotts targeted activewear as a category with strong potential for growth.

“I see this as a rare opportunity to capitalize on the apparel market’s hottest lifestyle trend which is activewear, shapewear and active lifestyle apparel,” said Spotts. “Combined with FAM’s relationships with the nation’s largest and strongest retailers [who represent 15,000 doors for FAM], it is a powerful licensing formula.”

FAM Brands’ portfolio includes activewear and bodywear by Marika, The Balance Collection and Bally Total Fitness, which the company acquired the rights of the Bally Total Fitness name in North America for apparel, accessories, food and beverages in 2012. The company plans to launch two additional lines bearing the Bally Total Fitness label: a men’s collection of active and performance separates for spring 2014, and an activewear line aimed at tweens for fall 2014.

Spotts said an immediate goal will be to license the Marika name in 35 categories including apparel, accessories, eyewear, beauty and home and lifestyle products. The Marika licensing program’s most recent license is with Weisner Products Inc. to manufacture men’s, women’s and children’s socks.

FAM Brands, which generates annual wholesale sales in excess of $100 million, also owns three other brands: Peace and Pearls, a women’s blouse and apparel label; La Vie Jetsetter, a children’s apparel brand, and Teháma, a specialist of upscale casual sportswear for men and women. Teháma will be relaunched later this year.
