PARIS — Nike is the latest brand to distance itself from Oscar Pistorius, the athlete accused of having murdered his girlfriend in his South African home on Feb. 14.
“Nike has suspended its contract with Oscar Pistorius,” the sportswear giant said in a statement. “We believe Oscar Pistorius should be afforded due process and we will continue to monitor the situation closely.”
The 26-year-old — who is the first double-amputee sprinter to compete in the Olympics — is known as “Blade Runner,” due to his carbon fiber artificial limbs. Pistorius won two gold medals and a silver at last year’s Paralympic Games in London. In the 2012 Olympics, he ran in the 4×400-meter relay and reached the 400-meter semifinal.
Meanwhile, as reported Wednesday, Thierry Mugler Perfumes took the decision to withdraw all its campaigns with Pistorius, who had been the face of its Amen men’s scent since 2011.
