1. THE INDIGO GALLERY
MAGIC Marketplace wants to turn the Mandalay Bay Convention Center into a one-stop shop for denim buyers with the launch of the Indigo Gallery in MAGIC’s Premium show. Intended to complement the rarefied premium denim labels showing at Project, which is also housed in Mandalay Bay, Indigo Gallery is highlighting about 30 jeans brands that have moderate prices and/or wide distribution. Exhibitors at Indigo Gallery include DKNY Jeans, Marithé & François Girbaud, Silver Jeans, Pepe Jeans London, Vigoss, Salsa Fits My Life and Lucky Brand, which is making its return to MAGIC.

2. POOLTRADESHOW AT MANDALAY BAY
The Mandalay Bay Convention Center has a new pool for buyers to explore. The PoolTradeshow, that is, which is moving from the Las Vegas Convention Center. Featuring emerging talent and independent designers like Heidi Roland, Cameron Hawaii and Destination Pin Up, Pool is joining MAGIC and Project at the Mandalay Bay. “There is better cross-shopping with the shows at Mandalay Bay,” said Chris DeMoulin, president of MAGIC International.
3. VANESSA WILLIAMS’ NEW BAG
Four seasons of portraying a chic and cunning fashion editrix on the TV show “Ugly Betty” has paid off for Vanessa Williams. The actress is planning to unveil her first fashion accessories label in WWDMAGIC’s White section. Launching for spring, Williams’ namesake line features handbags, clutches and organizers, all handmade of skins from Italy with wholesale prices running from $70 to $700. The line is rich in details: snake-printed napa leather adorns a nylon satin pouch (right), chunky amber beads dangle from a leather coil and jewel tones catch the eye in a tie-dye finish. Williams is scheduled to appear at WWDMAGIC on Aug. 17 and 18 to promote her line.
4. NOT SO DESPERATE HOUSEWIFE
After selling on HSN for nine years, Seventies siren Suzanne Somers is readying the retail expansion of her namesake line of fleece trenchcoats, Empire-waist knit dresses (left), ankle-zipped jeans, chain-link necklaces and other fashion pieces. The line is making its WWDMAGIC debut in the White section. Wholesaling from $27 to $87, the misses’ contemporary line is designed by Somers and her stepdaughter, Leslie Hamel, a Parsons School of Design grad, who created costumes for Madonna in the Eighties and ran a denim label called Leslie Hamel Jeans. “Suzanne likes to call [her line] hip, sexy but not desperate,” Hamel said.
5. FN PLATFORM RETURNS FN
FN Platform is striding toward its sophomore show at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Boasting a 30 percent increase in the number of exhibiting brands from its launch in February, FN Platform will feature more than 1,000 footwear lines — including Marc Jacobs, Robert Clergerie, Geox, Hunter Boots and Stride Rite — for women, men, juniors and children. Clergerie fans also will be treated to a historic retrospective of the French shoe designer.
6. TESTOSTERONE IN SIN CITY
Tapping into the growing popularity of mixed martial arts, MAGIC Marketplace partnered with the UFC to sponsor the World Extreme Cagefighting title fight on Aug. 18 at the Pearl Concert Theater in Palms Casino Resort. In a highly anticipated rematch, Joseph Benavidez gets another crack at Dominick Cruz, who defeated Benavidez last year for the bantamweight title. “Having an event in conjunction with the WEC show reinforces [our] show,” said Chris DeMoulin, president of MAGIC International. “It brings more people to town.”
7. STREET FIGHT
For mixed martial arts maniacs who can’t get enough of the no-holds-barred sport, the UFC will sponsor a sparring and training ring in MAGIC’s Street show. Athletes will come courtesy of the UFC as well as exhibiting brands including Tapout, Trinity, Silver Star and Form Athletics.
8. TRENDS IN MEN’S WEAR
Lilly Berelovich, president and chief creative officer of trend forecasting firm Fashion Snoops, presents an overview of spring and fall 2011 trends for men’s sportswear, denim, streetwear and accessories, Aug. 17 at noon, at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center, Lagoon Room F.
9. SOCIAL MARKETING STRATEGIES
Marketing pros from Fashionably Digital Los Angeles, PR Couture, XCVI Clothing and Lululemon Athletica discuss the overall evolution in social media marketing with tips on how to create meaningful online engagement with customers and how to effectively generate online sales, Aug. 17, 1:30 p.m. at the Las Vegas Convention Center, room N261.
10. WOMEN’S TREND FORECAST
David Wolfe, creative director of trend forecasting firm Doneger Creative Services, looks at the forces driving women’s fashion, ranging from lifestyle shifts and consumer profiles to trends in color, fabric and designs, Aug. 17 at 3 p.m., at the Las Vegas Convention Center, room N231.
11. SOURCING NEWS
Sourcing at MAGIC has grown by 30 percent over last year to showcase more than 700 apparel and footwear manufacturers, fabric mills, trim and component suppliers, print design studios and fashion supply-chain providers from more than 40 countries.
Taking place Aug. 16 to 19 at the Las Vegas Convention Center’s North Hall, Sourcing at MAGIC will launch two categories: Design Elements, a juried showcase of original design manufacturers offering ready-made designs with low minimums, and Footsteps, the show’s new footwear sourcing environment, representing component suppliers and manufacturers from the U.S., China, Taiwan and India.
Participating footwear makers include JP Originals, Fortune Dynamic, East Lion, SMAC and Legend. In addition, this season’s focus country, India, will feature more than 75 exhibitors. The Minister of Textiles for the Government of India, Dayanidhi Maran, will be in attendance on Aug. 16 for the official ribbon-cutting and inauguration ceremony at the India Pavilion, which will also host a cocktail reception open to all attendees on Aug. 17 at 3:30 p.m. Other countries significantly expanding their presence at this edition are Taiwan, the Philippines, Vietnam and Mexico, with more than 60 new exhibitors from these regions.
Expanding upon the show’s already-strong representation of resources from China, a new area called Premier China will showcase more than 30 large vertically integrated women’s, men’s and kids’ wear manufacturers from China offering contemporary design capabilities.
Sourcing at MAGIC is further expanding its fabric and trim environment representing more than 60 international textile firms.
Finally, Trend Galleries will give attendees an exclusive preview of key trends and colors for fall 2011. Exclusive color cards for the season by Pantone and Fashion Snoops will be available for sale at the show.
