NEW YORK — The summer season may be winding down, but the Threeasfour trio has swim on its mind.

Designers Gabi, Ange and Adi are building the eight-year-old label, and have created a capsule collection of swimwear to be unveiled during their spring 2009 runway show next month. The line will take its cues from Threeasfour’s signature elements, including asymmetrical lines and circular seaming.
While the three designers have previously dabbled in swim pieces for their shows, this will be the first time they plan to produce it for wholesale distribution.
“We always did swim, but it was mostly for the shows,” Adi said. “A lot of people asked us about it, and we finally wanted to create a line to offer to our customers. In the past, the one-of-a-kind special pieces were expensive, so we wanted find a way to make them more affordable.”
The swimwear collection, which the designers produce in-house, consists of five pieces: two bikinis, two single pieces that allow shoppers to mix and match their tops and bottoms, and one “tankini” fusion of a bikini and tank top that can also serve for activewear. The designers have also designed bodysuits and leggings as part of the program. Prints for the collection were inspired by a computer-generated fractal calculation, and the designs also feature shell details.
The collection wholesales from $100 to $250, and wholesale sales projections are $125,000 for the first season.
As for Adi and Ange, they can’t wait to test each piece for themselves. Adi, for instance, is an avid surfer, which was on her mind while she was designing the line. “When you have a surf accident, the swimwear sometimes doesn’t hold, especially the bra,” Adi said. “We turned one of our tank tops into a tankini that will be excellent for surfing.”
Ange, meanwhile, plans to lounge on the beach or pool in the designs — and she even plans to take them beyond the water arena. “Adi and I used to always collect Seventies vintage bathing suits,” she said. “We would wear them as tops in summer, even when you go out dancing. It’s a perfect thing to wear when you get hot in clubs.”
While there are no men’s trunks in the line, Gabi said they could well be part of brand extensions down the line. “We are thinking about doing a perfume and a men’s wear collection, and along those lines, we have men’s trunks in mind,” he said. “When the right time comes, we will do it.”
