Built in 1988, the Manifatture di San Maurizio factory can be considered the nerve center of Max Mara production.
In the 108,000-square-foot neat, bright space, 230 people (97 percent of which are women), create about 460 pieces each day, including coats, jackets and two-piece suits, for a total of about 100,000 garments a year.
“When we moved here 23 years ago, we had two goals in mind,” said Giuseppe Bacci, director of the factory. “We wanted to provide our workers with constant training, and we aimed to maintain and develop our quality culture.”
Bacci said keeping the high standard is possible because of the tight relationship between the factory and the design department, which cooperate to create items that are stylish yet easy to produce in large quantities.
But even if the company continuously invests in research and development, craftsmanship is still key at Manifatture di San Maurizio, with a number of details in the Atelier collections still done by hand.
“We consider this place more as a laboratory than a factory,” he said. “We test new fabrics and technologies, and we also have a flexible organization to adapt to different needs.”
