LOS ANGELES — Designers and manufacturers will have an expanded offering of textile and trend resources at their disposal this week with the start of the Los Angeles International Textile Show and the West Coast debut of Material World & Technology Solutions.

The two shows have formed a partnership and will kick off a three-day run on Wednesday at the California Market Center. Material World will begin putting on two shows a year here in conjunction with the Los Angeles International Textile Show. The combined number of exhibitors will range from 350 to 400.
Material World will occupy the basement floor, while Technology Solutions will share the 13th floor with the Los Angeles International Textile Show. The Korea Trade Investment Promotion Agency, or KOTRA, will sponsor a Korea Pavilion with as many as 70 exhibitors on the first floor, while the Korea Textile Trade Association will feature 30 booths on the 12th floor. The L.A. International Textile Show increased its number of exhibitors by 30 percent from the last show in April to 230. The show will mark the unveiling of a new area on the 13th floor, featuring 20 higher-priced mills from Italy and France that specialize in embroidery, double-faced duchesse, silk, jacquard and taffeta.
CMC is hoping the addition of Material World to the show will allow it to reach beyond designers and bring a new segment of buyers to the show. While Material World encompasses fabric purveyors for home furnishings and machinery for heat transfers, screenings and appliqués, Technology Solutions includes 16 exhibitors that provide software for 3-D CAD design, product lifecycle management and enterprise resource planning.
“L.A. is really where the manufacturing is happening domestically,” said Tim von Gal, partner of Urban Expositions, the Kennesaw, Ga.-based organization that runs Material World.
Von Gal is bullish on his trade event’s prospects in Southern California despite rising competition from the GlobalTex show, which will take place at the Los Angeles Convention Center from Oct. 13 to 15. Material World ended its event in New York to focus on Los Angeles as a new venue, he said.
“As long as people are in business to do business, they need to see what is out there,” he said. “The group that offers the most exhibitors to the attending audience will probably be the most appealing.”
GlobalTex will host its sophomore show this month. Run by Dallas-based Market Center Management Co., GlobalTex promises an international mix of 150 vendors hailing from Italy, France, Turkey, the U.K., India, Vietnam, Germany, Portugal, Pakistan, Bangladesh, China and Africa.
The presence of two textile expos running within 11 days of each other is likely to test the resiliency of the market for designers and manufacturers who are carefully watching their budgets in the protracted economic slowdown. Show organizers believe these conditions could help their cause, presenting domestic trade shows as a more feasible option to overseas expos.
“The retailers and manufacturers cannot go overseas as they once could,” said Stephanie Cole, vice president of GlobalTex. “Now they’re making sure their teams attend textile shows but not necessarily sending them overseas.”
