HOME BODY: The new trend of Web sites becoming print magazines continues with New York Design Hunting, the first stand-alone shelter title to come from the editors of New York magazine. The popularity of Design Hunting, an online newsletter on nymag.com, inspired its transition to print. “The Web is fantastic but, with the magazine, you can keep it and hold it and reference it,” said design editor Wendy Goodman. “You can take this with you.”
There are three different covers featuring overturned cans of paint in either blue, red or yellow. “This magazine is a hybrid of aspirational design and practical information,” added Goodman. “So the paint is beautiful and luscious looking but it’s also down to earth.”

The 220-page magazine features the usual New York apartment eye-candy stories, with a look at Murray Moss’ “improbable” Midtown apartment, as well as a Battery Park home that is so child-friendly that it has an indoor tree house. Then there are the more practical pieces, such as converting a 375-square-foot dentist’s office into a studio apartment.
“I’m engaged in personal design and it’s what draws me in as a reader,” said Goodman. “You always want to know why people made the decisions they made.”
The title has 74 ad pages, with 90 percent from design advertisers such as Sicis, Poltrona Frau, Kravet, SieMatic, Artemide and Ralph Pucci. New York has planned to distribute 75,000 copies through a combination of newsstand and a mailing to design professionals and enthusiasts. The first issue hits newsstands on Tuesday but, after that, the future of the title remains unclear. A spokeswoman said the company is determining the schedule for the next one now. “I’m really heartened for the support for print still,” said Goodman. “We’ll see how this goes.”
