TWEET, TWEET: Twitter filed for its long-awaited initial public offering under a confidential process reserved for companies with sales of under $1 billion. The news came in the form of a tweet, of course.
NORDSTROM’S $6 BILLION GOAL: Nordstrom Inc. president Blake Nordstrom told a Goldman Sachs investment conference, “Our e-commerce business, it was $1.3 billion last year, and we think it could be maybe roughly $6 billion by 2020.”
URBAN’S WIDE VIEW: Frank Conforti, chief financial officer, Urban Outfitters Inc., also spoke at the Goldman conference and told investors, “We feel like we’re competing with everyone that’s out there on the Web, social media, news, people who are selling products, because we feel like we’re competing for the consumers’ attention.”
IPHONE COLORS UP, PRICES DOWN: Apple introduced two new iPhones — the plastic 5c, which starts at $99 and comes in blue, green, pink, yellow and white, and the sleeker 5s, which starts at $199 and can read fingerprints. The more budget-minded 5c sparked worries on one end that the company would hurt its brand by lowing prices, as well as complaints that it wasn’t lowering prices enough to entice overseas shoppers.
MACY’S YOUTUBE PUSH: Macy’s Inc. linked with StyleHaul, a network of fashion and beauty YouTube channels, to create online videos by four personalities — DulceCandy87, or Dulce Candy Tejeda; Carlibel55, or Carli Bybel; Sarahbelle93x, or Sarah Eichelberger, and Carly Cristman. The channels will promote Macy’s merchandise aimed at Millennial customers.
NOWMANIFEST STABLE GROWS: Fairchild Fashion Media-owned NowManifest added three blogs to its network. Jane Aldridge’s Sea of Shoes and Yvan Rodic’s Facehunter launched on Tuesday, and Susanna Lau’s Style Bubble is slated to bow later this fall.
COACH LEADS IN CHAT: A StellaService study of the online chat functions of 100 U.S.-based e-commerce sites offered some positive reinforcement for Coach.com — the only site to score in the top 10 in both the “total time to live agent” and “issue resolution” categories.
BERNHOLTZ ENTERS E-TAIL: Rock & Republic cofounder and former president Andrea Bernholtz launched a costume jewelry e-commerce site called My Bijoux Box.
MR PORTER’S LUXE WATCHES: E-tailer Mr Porter started offering Bremont watches this week, with models priced from $4,250 to $6,395. The site will be Bremont’s sole online retailer.
NASTY BOOK: E-commerce maven Sophia Amoruso, founder and chief executive officer of Nasty Gal, has struck a book deal. “#GirlBoss: How to Write Your Own Rules While Turning Heads and Turning Profits” is scheduled to come out in May and will be part memoir and part business advice.
