A VERY VOGUE HALLOWEEN: Vogue is marking Halloween with a theme-appropriate project: a collection of masks created by designers and brands just for the holiday, and photographed on Vogue’s editors, models and celebrities by Olivia Bee. The images will launch on Vogue.com and the magazine’s Instagram account today and run through Halloween on Thursday.
The magazine’s creative digital director Sally Singer devised the project with stylist Jorden Bickham and senior photo editor Andrew Gold “to continue to do fashion portfolios that we envision for both our Web site and our Instagram, and to do something fun for the holiday,” she said.

After asking designers and brands for imaginative masks, about 35 of these submissions were photographed in a studio on Wednesday and Thursday. Tonne Goodman dons a Fornasetti mask; Grace Coddington is in Stephen Jones; Camilla Nickerson is in Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, and Hamish Bowles is in one by makeup artist Pat McGrath. Olivier Theyskens wears a design of his own; Angel Haze is in Opening Ceremony; Hilary Rhoda is in Nike; Jessica Hart is in Langley Fox Hemingway, and Toni Garrn is in Philip Treacy. Other masks came from the likes of Lanvin, Manolo Blahnik, Hugo Guinness, Thakoon and Erdem.
“It allows us to collaborate in a quick and humorous way with people we really love,” said Singer, who herself is in a “some horribly scary nun mask” from Hussein Chalayan.
“I hope that it will offer some inspiration for Halloween,” she said, adding that it could also reconnect readers to the holiday “who thought that they had aged out of Halloween when candy no longer was of interest.”
The plan is to auction off as many as possible for a charity in the near future, more details of which will be disclosed at a later date. One name noticeably missing from the masked lineup is Anna Wintour. She was in Los Angeles for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund when the shoot took place, Singer pointed out.
