BEPPE BY THE BOOK: On Monday night, the cream of the cream of Italy’s fashion business flocked at the Galleria Giangaleazzo Visconti to celebrate the launch of “b.m. Beppe Modenese, Ministry of Elegance,” the biography of “the prime minister of fashion,” as WWD defined Beppe Modenese in 1983. Laudomia Pucci; Fulvia and Giovanna Ferragamo; Mario Boselli, head of Italy’s Chamber of Fashion, and a number of fashion p.r.’s and journalists filled up the gallery, which formerly hosted the studio of Italian painter Lucio Fontana.
Conceived by Vogue Italia’s art director Luca Stoppini, the book, which features a series of both Italian and English texts written by influential fashion journalist and writers, including John Fairchild, Suzy Menkes, Franca Sozzani and Roberta Filippini, traces the life and the work of Modenese, the honorary chairman of the Italian Chamber of Fashion.

“When I started working I was scared of Beppe,” revealed Sozzani, who also said that once Modenese gave her a dog, named Topazio, that was so naughty that she was forced to give it away. Despite the difficult starts, Sozzani praised Modenese’s work for the fashion industry: “Beppe had the courage to believe in the possibility of creating a real Italian fashion system.”
