The travel-centric glossy has poached T: The New York Times Style Magazine’s publisher Brendan Monaghan. Bill Wackermann, Traveler’s former publisher and chief revenue officer, and a Condé Nast stalwart, has been let go.
At one time, Wackermann had overseen a mini empire at Condé. He was publisher of Details, Glamour, Brides, Bon Appétit and W about five years ago. In 2013, he was moved over to one title, Condé Nast Traveler.
Monaghan, who starts his new gig at Condé on Dec. 7, is a known quantity to the magazine publisher. He left Condé, where he served as associate publisher of GQ in 2014 for T. Prior to GQ, Monaghan served as Vogue’s Los Angeles sales manager, and before that he was wine and spirits director at GQ from 2000 to 2003.
“Brendan is an accomplished executive and an industry-thought leader, and I’m pleased to welcome him back to Condé Nast,” said president Bob Sauerberg. “His deep understanding of the digital marketplace, combined with his experience and success in the luxury market, will be key as we take Condé Nast Traveler to new heights.”
For his part, Monaghan offered: “No one does luxury travel and lifestyle content better than Condé Nast Traveler. This is a truly amazing brand at the intersection of culture and style, and I can’t wait to work alongside Pilar Guzmán [editor in chief] and the rest of the outstanding team.”
Like its rivals, Traveler has experienced an erosion in print advertising pages. This year, in the January to September period, the glossy had a 14.4 percent dip in pages to 560.95 versus the year-ago period, according to data obtained by WWD from the Publishers Information Bureau. Unlike its competitors, however, the travel magazine didn’t experience steep declines in newsstand sales or circulation.
The Alliance for Audited Media said that for the six months ended June 30, Traveler posted a 4.3 percent reduction in total single copy sales to 26,659. Total paid & verified circulation remained flat at 811,839.
