Fortune Taps Alan Murray as Editor

Murray, who starts on Aug. 25, joins the Time Inc.-owned magazine from Pew Research Center where he served as the organization's president.

Fortune has named Alan Murray as its new editor.


He succeeds Andy Serwer, who has been dismissed by the Time Inc.-owned magazine, following eight years as its editor.

Murray, who starts on Aug. 25, joins Fortune from Pew Research Center where he served as the organization’s president. Prior to Pew, Murray served as deputy managing editor and online executive editor at The Wall Street Journal. He also worked as CNBC’s Washington bureau chief from 2002 to 2005, among other journalism jobs.
Todd Larsen, executive vice president of Time Inc. touted Murray’s Web and social media experience, noting: “He is a digital champion and media visionary who can bridge every aspect of our business, moving effortlessly from the newsroom to the boardroom to television to conference stage.”
Norman Pearlstine, the company’s chief content officer added: “I came to appreciate Alan’s intellect, and his love of news about business and economics in the years we were both at The Wall Street Journal, and I have followed his career closely as he moved into management while expanding his interests from print to video, digital and events. There is no one more wired in the business and media worlds, and I am thrilled to have an editor of his caliber and intellect at the helm.”
