SELF’S FASHION PLAY: A new team at Self magazine is slowly coming together under editor in chief Joyce Chang, who took the helm in late April. Chang’s newest hire is Melissa Ventosa Martin, who will join the magazine on June 30 as fashion director.

Ventosa Martin comes from sister publication Glamour, where she served as the glossy’s style director since 2010. Prior to Glamour, she was fashion market director and fashion editor at T: The New York Times Style Magazine.

Chang lauded Ventosa Martin’s “personal style” as the embodiment of Self’s “clean, crisp, modern” style, adding that she brought on the new hire to help make the magazine’s fashion have a “more cohesive point of view.”

“I want fashion to feel very much part of a reader’s life, which it is,” Chang told WWD, noting that she didn’t want the fashion in Self to be relegated to just fitness apparel.

Indeed, the pages will showcase a “variety of looks” that include the gym, weekend and after work, she noted.

“We want to elevate Self in the content and in the tone,” she said, hinting that the magazine would take a more holistic, if not lifestyle, approach.

“I think the word ‘self’ is a very strong word,” Chang explained. “I think it speaks to women. There’ s a great resonance to the word for women, and there are many ways you can look at your sense of self.”

Since grabbing the top job at Self, Chang’s other hires have included art director Barbara Reyes, who came from O, The Oprah Magazine, former People StyleWatch executive editor Suzanne D’Amato as executive editor and Rebecca Sinn, another Glamour alum, as entertainment director.

Chang said she’s still looking to fill a few more roles, including a digital director and a few editorial jobs, including a health-focused role.
