NRF WEB TAX PUSH: The National Retail Federation is kicking off a 60-day campaign aimed at pressing Congress to pass legislation that would essentially give states the authority to collect sales taxes from e-commerce sites in the 45 states that collect sales taxes. “It will be through grassroots activity back in local Congressional districts, targeted Capitol Hill visits, paid advertising, social media and a road show that will take us to various cities,” said Matthew Shay, president and chief executive officer at NRF, adding that the budget for the initiative is in the “seven figures,” drawn from the association’s $10 million lobbying budget. The campaign begins with print ads Tuesday in the National Journal and Roll Call featuring Jim Adams, owner of Falls Road Running Store, based in Baltimore, who advocates for legislation to “level the playing field between online and brick-and-mortar retailers.” The NRF will also run ads in the key Congressional districts, create an online petition urging Congress to take action on the issue and participate in “road trips” with local retailers, elected officials and other business community members.
