HAT TRICK: The narrow Bookmarc store in Paris was rammed with people Monday night as guests slithered their way in to see milliner Stephen Jones and the issue of A Magazine he edited. It’s dedicated to illustration and practically every one had an amusing backstory, which Jones gleefully recounted as he turned the pages.
The sketch by Rei Kawakubo of pompom hats? “It came by fax,” he said. “I wonder if people can make out the number?”
This story first appeared in the March 5, 2013 issue of WWD. Subscribe Today.
Those gigantic fur toppers for Marc Jacobs’ fall 2012 collection? “We just started getting bigger and bigger,” he said.
Walter Van Beirendonck’s sketch of a giant derby and a skirt with a built-in ostrich came with the notation, “Is it going to be stable?”
“I think not — not in the fashion industry,” Jones observed.
Other gems include a John Galliano sketch of a look from his 1994 “Princess Lucretia” collection, and a sultry series on Dita Von Teese by David Downton.
Dan Thawley, A Magazine’s editor in chief, said Van Beirendonck started the publication. It is based in Antwerp, Belgium, whose MoMu Fashion Museum hosted a Jones exhibition “The Accent of Fashion” in fall 2010.
