STRINGS ATTACHED: Forget about the expected launch cocktail: To accompany the release of its fourth issue, niche Paris-based fashion annual Vestoj created a bespoke six-act theater piece starring “Little John,” a puppet version of John Galliano. The 20-minute play dovetails from the fall issue’s theme of “fashion and power” and is based on a televised interview the disgraced Dior designer gave on “Charlie Rose” last June. The next performance is scheduled for Dec. 10 at the Silencio nightclub in the French capital, to be followed by another on Feb. 4 at the London College of Fashion.
“Both Galliano and Rose appeared to be acting out some very clearly defined roles, with very little scope for improvisation,” Vestoj editor in chief Anja Aronowsky Cronberg told WWD, describing the play’s subtext as exploring “the power of the media and about the fact that the story we are being told is seldom the actual story of importance.”
Puppet-maker Etienne Bideau-Rey created Little John’s outfit based on the Napoleon-style garb Galliano wore to take his bow after his acclaimed “Madame Butterfly” Dior couture show in 2007.
For the magazine, Vestoj published interviews about power with a range of fashion figures, including Chloé chief executive officer Geoffroy de la Bourdonnaye, H&M’s creative adviser Margareta van den Bosch, A.P.C. founder Jean Touitou and Paris headhunter Floriane de Saint Pierre.
