Joe Zee Said Heading to Yahoo

Multiple sources told WWD that Elle’s creative director has accepted an offer from the Web giant.

THE LATEST YAHOOLIGAN: JOE ZEE? It appears Joe Zee is getting closer to the exit at Hearst Tower.

While it has been widely reported Zee has been in talks with Yahoo to head up its fashion site, multiple sources told WWD that Elle’s creative director has accepted an offer from the Web giant. Asked to comment on whether Zee had given his notice, a spokeswoman from Elle said: “We don’t speculate on employee matters.”

For Elle, Zee’s departure would be a big blow since the creative director, who has been at Elle since 2007, is arguably the most prominent face of the magazine. Neither Zee nor his boss, editor in chief Robbie Myers, responded to requests seeking comment.

Yahoo has been relaunching several of its online verticals, including its fashion site, and in recent weeks has been scooping up several big names in the process. On Wednesday, the Internet company tapped Bobbi Brown as editor in chief of its beauty site, and indicated that it would reveal more high-profile appointments later this week.

As for what might happen at Elle if Zee does depart, one possibility to help fill the void could be Alex Gonzalez, who has been a rising star at Elle parent Hearst Magazines. Currently, Gonzalez is the artistic director of Marie Claire, as well as the design director of Town & Country. Gonzalez did not return phone calls seeking comment Thursday.
