Denis Leary brings his biting comedy style to the Fashion Rocks stage.
The emcee of this year’s Fashion Rocks event is better known for biting sarcasm and razorsharp wit than his fashion sense. Stand-up comedian and Emmy- and Golden Globe-nominated actor Denis Leary has had big-screen success in films such as “The Ref,” “Wag the Dog” and “The Thomas Crown Affair,” and can currently be seen in the critically acclaimed television series “Rescue Me,” which he created, cowrites and coproduces. His new book, “Why We Suck: A Feel Good Guide to Staying Fat, Loud, Lazy and Stupid,” will hit bookshelves this fall. WWD caught up with Dr. Denis Leary (the honorary Ph.D. was given to him by Emerson College, his alma mater) to discuss fashion advice, style icons and why he loves socks.
WWD: What made you decide to host the Fashion Rocks event?
Denis Leary: Money. And the hope of glimpsing a few scantily clad models backstage.
WWD: What is your favorite item of clothing that you personally own, and why?
D.L.: Socks. They keep your feet so warm and toasty.
WWD: As host of Fashion Rocks, all eyes will be on you. What are you planning to wear?
D.L.: Socks. Plus a suit.
WWD: Who is your personal style icon, and why?
D.L.: Björk. Anyone who can wear a bird on the red carpet has got way bigger balls than me.
WWD: Hosting this event cements your place as a fashion plate. How do you feel about this moniker?
D.L.: Hopefully, the spotlight will also shine on the sock and all of its underappreciated glory.
WWD: What did you wear to your high school prom?
D.L.: The loudest powder blue tux with elephant bell-bottomed slacks and a pair of 6-inch-high white pleather shoes. And socks. Plaid socks.
WWD: What’s the best fashion advice you’ve ever received?
D.L.: Put down the eyeliner and take off the spandex pants.
WWD: What’s the worst fashion advice you’ve ever received?
D.L.: You’d look so hot with some black eyeliner and these orange spandex pants.
WWD: Have you ever made a fashion choice you later regretted?
D.L.: See question number six.
WWD: As a Worcester, Mass., native, you’ve probably seen the T-shirts that read “Worcester: Paris of the ’80s.” How do you feel about your hometown’s place among the great fashion cities of the world?
D.L.: I’m wearing a T-shirt that reads “Hartford: Worcester of the New Millennium.”
